  Coaching Process

You have read about coaching and have decided that it might be for you.  What is next? I detail below the general steps in getting started on the coaching journey.

  • Introductory call/Chemistry check.

  • This is a call to have an initial chat with you about myself and the coaching process.  On this call we will discuss the following:
    • Introduction to myself and my background
    • Introduction by you. This is an opportunity to explain why you are interested in coaching, if you have done coaching before, why now, and what you would hope to get from it.
    • What approach suits you?
    • Discuss your experience and understanding of coaching
    • I’ll explain the type of coaching I provide and my approach
    • Review next steps
    • Call takes around 30 mins
  • The purpose of this call gives us a chance to see if we can work together.  You can then take some time to decide if you want to proceed with the coaching.  You may decide that I might not be the coach for you.  That is totally OK.  It is very important that you feel comfortable with your coach.  And you should talk to a few coaches to get a feel for what works for you.

  • Self-assessment questionnaire
  • Once we have agreed to proceed with the coaching, I will send you a self-assessment questionnaire.  The purpose of this questionnaire is to:

  • Get you to start some self analysis on your own
  • Enable you to get in to the coaching space
  • Allow you to become confident with the coaching process.
  • Give me some background and insight into you, which will assist in the coaching process.

  • Coaching sessions

Once I have received the questionnaire back, we can organise the logistics of arranging the first session.
  • Sessions are normally held in a public place e.g. quiet area in a hotel etc.  Unfortunately, for safety reasons, session cannot take place in private dwellings.
  • At the first session, we will cover a number of things.
    • I will go over some housekeeping duties such as confidentiality, how the process will work etc.
    • I will ask you what agenda you would like to discuss and what you hope to get out of the session i.e. at the end of the session what will you hope to be walking away with.  Don’t worry if you don’t have an agenda as we can work through a number of tools which will allow you to identify areas to work on.  You will be doing most of the talking in the session.
    • Where appropriate, I may suggest some tools that might help to work on an agenda.  When I do, I will fully explain the tool, how it works, and what the expected outcome is.  If it’s not for you, just let me know and we can try something else.  If is important to remember that you are in control of the process.
    • Additionally, I will challenge you at times.  This will be done in a fully supportive manner and will be done to support and develop your agenda.  At the end of the session, we will agree a set of actions for you to carry out before the next session.
  • Between sessions, I can touch base with you to see how you are getting on.  This is totally optional.  Some people will just want to do their own things.  For others, it helps to have someone to link in with them and touch base from time to time.
  • Following sessions will take on the same approach as the first session to a large degree.  Nothing is set in stone and will be dependent on how the conversation is going.
  • At the final session we will do a review of the work we have done to date.  We will confirm the plan for moving forward.  Additionally, we will agree on any follow up support you may like.  Again, this is not mandatory and can be discussed if needed.
The above is an overall guideline.  Nothing is set in stone and we can see how things progress and what works best.
